How to Set Up Twilio for SMS and Calls
This article explains how to set up Twilio in 100Hires to enable SMS messaging and phone calls with candidates. Twilio is a communication platform that lets you contact candidates directly from the app.
What Twilio integration enables
- Send SMS messages to candidates
- Make phone calls from candidate profiles
- Record calls for reference
- Forward incoming calls to real phone numbers
- Let callers leave voicemail when nobody answers
- Use multiple phone numbers
- Automatic number selection based on candidate location
Prerequisites
You need a Twilio account with:
- Verified phone number(s)
- SMS-enabled numbers
- Voice-enabled numbers (for calls)
- A2P 10DLC registration (required for US SMS)
Setting up Twilio
Step 1: Get Twilio credentials
- Log in to your Twilio account
- Go to Console Dashboard
- Copy your Account SID
- Copy your Auth Token
Step 2: Connect in 100Hires
- Go to Settings / Integrations
- Find Twilio section

- Enter your Account SID
- Enter your Auth Token
- Add your Twilio phone number(s)
- Save
Step 3: Configure phone numbers
- Select which Twilio numbers to use
- Set a default number
- Enable automatic number selection (optional)
A2P 10DLC compliance (US only)
For sending SMS to US numbers, you must complete A2P 10DLC registration:
What is A2P 10DLC
Application-to-Person (A2P) messaging using local 10-digit long codes. Carriers require this registration to reduce spam.
Registration steps
- Register your business with Twilio's Trust Hub
- Create a messaging campaign
- Link your phone numbers to the campaign
- Wait for carrier approval (1-4 weeks)
Why it matters
- Without registration, US SMS may be blocked
- Registered numbers have higher delivery rates
- Required by all major US carriers
Sending SMS
From candidate profile
- Open candidate profile
- Go to Messages tab
- Select SMS option

- Choose or create SMS template
- Send
In nurture campaigns
Add SMS steps to automated sequences:
- Create nurture campaign
- Add SMS step

- Select SMS template
- Set timing
Making calls
- Open candidate profile
- Click the phone icon or call button

- Call connects through your browser
- Optionally enable call recording
Incoming call forwarding and voicemail
When a candidate calls your Twilio number, 100Hires can forward the call to your hiring team in sequence.
- Go to Settings / Integrations
- Open the Twilio section
- Enable call forwarding
- Add one or more real phone numbers
- Set how long each number should ring before the call moves to the next number
- Add a voicemail greeting if callers should be able to leave a message
If nobody answers and a voicemail greeting is set, Twilio reads the greeting to the caller and records their voicemail. Voicemail and answered-call recordings appear with the call record in the candidate timeline.
Call recording
Enable call recording to:
- Automatically record calls
- Recordings appear in candidate activity
- Review for training or reference
- Check local laws for recording consent requirements
Limitations
If your Twilio number already has a custom TwiML voice webhook configured, 100Hires will not overwrite it. Incoming call forwarding and voicemail will not activate until the custom voice webhook is removed from that Twilio number.
If the caller's number does not match a candidate in your account, the call can still be logged, but it will not be linked to a candidate profile.
Tips
- Use local numbers for better answer rates
- Keep SMS messages short (160 characters optimal)
- Include your name and company in texts
- Respect candidate preferences
- Consider timezone when sending messages
