Why Don't My Pipeline Stages Show on New Jobs
This article explains why pipeline stages created in Settings don't automatically appear on new jobs. You need to add them to a workflow for them to show up.
Why this happens
Adding stages at Settings / Pipeline Stages creates the stages, but doesn't automatically add them to any workflow.
Jobs use workflows, and workflows contain specific sets of stages. A stage must be added to a workflow before it appears on jobs using that workflow.
How to fix
Option 1: Add stages to default workflow
- Open any job
- Go to the Workflow tab
- Find the dropdown at the bottom

- Search for your stage and add it
- Save
- This updates the default workflow for all jobs using it
Option 2: Create a custom workflow
- Open a job's Workflow tab
- Enable "Use different workflows for different jobs"

- Create a new workflow

- Add your custom stages to this workflow

- Assign this workflow to relevant jobs

Understanding the relationship
Settings / Pipeline Stages = Available stages (the library)
Workflows = Sets of stages used by jobs
Jobs = Use a specific workflow
Creating a stage in settings is like adding a book to a library. You still need to put the book on a shelf (workflow) for it to be used.
Quick reference
Action | Result |
|---|---|
Add stage in Settings | Stage becomes available to add to workflows |
Add stage to workflow | Stage appears on jobs using that workflow |
Create workflow | New set of stages you can assign to jobs |
